HOME / OUR PROCESS

Careful processing.
Quality at every stage.

Quality is built through a series of decisions and checks. Our processing combines careful paddy selection, storage and preparation, modern milling equipment, grading, colour sorting and assessment of cooked samples.

Sri Balaji Rice Mill processing facility

The route through the mill depends on whether raw or steam rice is being produced and on the requirements of the particular lot. The sections below explain the major operations and quality checks; they are not a single fixed sequence for every variety.

Paddy Selection and Sampling at Sri Balaji Rice Mill

Paddy Selection & Sampling

Incoming paddy is carefully selected and sampled for moisture and grain quality. Only paddy that meets our quality standards is accepted for processing.

More about this stage

Quality control starts with the material entering the mill. Paddy is sourced from farmers in the surrounding Ballari region and sampled at the time of purchase. Checks include moisture, grain condition, broken and defective grains, and paddy density. A lower price does not make a lot acceptable if it fails the mill’s quality standards. Sampling helps decisions take place before the lot is brought into the processing system.

Storage at Sri Balaji Rice Mill

Storage

Selected paddy is stored under suitable conditions to maintain quality before processing.

More about this stage

Selected paddy is primarily stored in silos designed to provide ventilation and protection from changing weather. Storage is part of protecting the quality already present in the grain. Preparation depends on the product being made: raw and steam rice do not follow an identical route. Drying and other preparation stages are managed according to the requirements of the lot and the intended variety. The mill’s dryer and boiler facilities support these operations.

Cleaning and Destoning at Sri Balaji Rice Mill

Cleaning & Destoning

Paddy is cleaned to remove dust, straw and other foreign matter, and destoned to ensure clean grains for milling.

More about this stage

Paddy cleaning helps remove straw, dust and other unwanted matter before milling. The mill uses a dedicated paddy destoner and a separate rice destoner in the processing line. These are different checks at different stages, helping remove stones as the material moves from paddy to rice. Cleanliness depends on the combined work of the cleaning and separation equipment rather than a single machine.

Milling and Polishing at Sri Balaji Rice Mill

Milling & Polishing

Clean paddy is milled and polished using advanced Buhler equipment to achieve the desired grain quality and finish.

More about this stage

Milling removes the husk and prepares the rice for its required finish. The automated Buhler plant includes whitening and polishing equipment that supports gentle processing, cooling and a consistent surface finish. Equipment settings and checks at this stage matter because grain quality and appearance can be affected by the way it is handled. The aim is a well-processed grain suited to the variety being produced.

Grading and Colour Sorting at Sri Balaji Rice Mill

Grading & Colour Sorting

Grains are graded and passed through a Sortex S6 colour sorting system to remove discoloured grains and impurities.

More about this stage

Grading separates rice according to grain characteristics and helps distinguish whole grains from broken rice. The mill uses a Cimbria rice grader, along with thick and thin graders, to support grain-size uniformity. This stage gives different grades their appropriate place in the product range and supports consistency in the rice prepared for packing.

The Buhler Sortex S6, installed in 2015, uses optical inspection to help identify and remove discoloured or defective grains and unwanted material. It supplements the cleaning and grading stages. The sorter is part of the overall processing system, with the preceding machinery and ongoing checks supporting its work. The result is rice prepared with attention to cleanliness and the appearance of the grain.

Cooking Checks at Sri Balaji Rice Mill

Cooking Checks

Cooked samples from processed batches are checked for key quality parameters such as appearance, texture and taste.

More about this stage

An uncooked grain tells only part of the story. Samples from processed batches are cooked so that the mill can assess the final rice before it is passed for packing. Cooking behaviour, appearance, texture and taste inform that assessment. These checks connect the factory’s work with the way the rice is actually used in a kitchen, and are an important part of our approach to product consistency.

Automated Packing at Sri Balaji Rice Mill

Automated Packing

The final product is packed using automated filling and stitching to maintain hygiene and consistency.

More about this stage

After the rice has passed the relevant checks, automatic filling and stitching equipment prepares the bags. Automation reduces manual handling during packing and supports consistent preparation of the finished product. The packed rice then moves into distribution through the brand’s wholesalers, agents and factory outlets. Packaging sizes and available varieties can be explored in the product range.

OUR TECHNOLOGY

Technology that strengthens our quality.

The 2008 installation of an automated Buhler plant marked a major upgrade in our milling facilities. Subsequent investment in the Sortex S6 in 2015 strengthened the sorting stage. Dedicated destoners, the Cimbria grader, thick and thin graders, and automatic packing equipment contribute to the wider system.

Technology gives our team the tools to control processing. Sampling, defined parameters and cooking checks help assess the outcome.

PEOPLE & THE WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Care throughout our mill.

Attention to hygiene extends to the premises and equipment. The existing mill practices include food-grade coatings within bins, dust control in the machinery section and reduced manual handling through automatic packing. These measures support the handling of a food product and the working conditions of the team.

Trees within the factory grounds, rainwater-harvesting provision and employee-safety measures form part of the mill’s broader operating responsibilities. Quality is considered alongside the conditions in which the rice is processed.
